evidence. The meaning is not that, however lofty his readers’ moments of rapture, a true and authentic speaking in tongues could never contradict their Christian confession. If that were so, Paul would scarcely have insisted later that the gift should he used in rational and orderly fashion. Paul is here attempting one more time what he deserves to be celebrated for as pioneer—to bend, warp the notion of Spirit, his nature, power, and manifestations into the service of what God has done in Christ.
